Introduction

Vaani ("we," "our," or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and website.

Information We Collect

Personal Information

  • Account Information: Name, email address, profile photo
  • Authentication Data: Information from third-party login providers (Google, Facebook, Apple)

Device and Usage Information

  • Device identifiers and type
  • Operating system and version
  • App usage statistics and interaction data

Media and Content

  • Camera Access: Used for live conversation broadcasting
  • Microphone Access: Used for audio during conversations
  • Photo Library: Used for profile photos and thumbnails

Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services:

  • Firebase: Authentication, database, analytics, crash reporting
  • Agora: Real-time video/audio communication
  • Ably: Real-time messaging
  • X (Twitter) API: Sign-in-with-X authentication, handle verification, and retrieval of publicly available profile information when you authorize it or when a user creates a campaign or challenge naming an X user

Visitors Without an Account

You can browse Vaani, view conversations, and mark a conversation as "interested" without creating an account. When you use these features while signed out, we process a small amount of information solely to make them work and to protect them from abuse:

  • IP address and user agent: Used at the moment of your request and immediately converted into an irreversible hash. That hash is generated with a secret value we replace every day, so it cannot be reversed to identify you and cannot be matched against activity from a previous day. We never store your raw IP address.
  • An anonymous identifier stored on your device: A randomly generated ID saved in your browser's local storage or your app's local settings. It is not derived from your identity, your device hardware, or your network address.

We use this information only to:

  • Count unique views on a conversation
  • Record a conversation as "interested" once per visitor, rather than every time you tap
  • Limit request rates, to prevent automated abuse of the features that do not require signing in

This information is not used for advertising, profiling, or cross-site tracking, and it is not sold or shared for those purposes. It is not combined with your account if you later sign in. You can remove the anonymous identifier at any time by clearing your browser's site data or your app's storage.

Publicly Available Information in User-Generated Proposals

Vaani hosts user-generated campaigns and challenges — proposals for conversations between named individuals. When a user creates a proposal that names another person, Vaani may display publicly available information about that person, including:

  • The person's name
  • Their public social media handle (e.g., X/Twitter handle)
  • Their public profile photo retrieved via the X (Twitter) API

This information is used solely to populate the proposal and to make clear which individual is being proposed. It is not used for advertising, profiling, or any secondary purpose.

Opt-Out for Named Individuals

If you are named in a campaign, challenge, or other user-generated surface on Vaani and you do not want to be featured, you may request removal via our Opt-Out page. We honor requests within 24 hours for California and New York residents and within 48 hours for all others. No legal demand is required.

Your Data When You Sign In With X

When you authenticate via X (Twitter) sign-in, we receive and store only the fields X provides in its standard authentication response: your X user ID, display name, handle, and profile photo URL. We do not receive your password. We do not post to your X account without your explicit action.

How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and maintain our service
  • To authenticate your identity
  • To enable live conversation functionality
  • To improve our services
  • To send push notifications (with your consent)
  • To respond to support requests
  • To prevent abuse and keep the service secure

Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with:

  • Service providers who assist in operating our app
  • Legal authorities when required by law
  • Other users (profile information you choose to make public)

Data Retention

We retain data associated with your account for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time.

Information we process for visitors without an account is short-lived and expires automatically:

  • Rate-limiting records (hashed IP address): 1 minute
  • Unique-view records (hashed IP address and user agent): 48 hours
  • The daily secret used to create those hashes: replaced every day and deleted within 48 hours, after which the hashes cannot be recreated
  • "Interested" records (anonymous device identifier): up to 1 year, so that the same visitor is not counted twice

Because these records are not linked to an account, we are generally unable to identify which of them relate to a particular person. Clearing your browser's site data or your app's storage removes the anonymous identifier from your device.
